Laura Hunt
I paint the human figure and landscapes. Although they offer different opportunities for creative
expression, they both engage me with the way light and shadow express form, emotion and the human experience. I’m drawn to the emotion expressed by the gesture of a hand or the tilt of a head, the long shadows cast by a barren desert mesa or the tough resilience of a scrubby tree.
Whether I’m painting a landscape or a face, themes of melancholy, introspection, nostalgia, empathy and social issues bind the work together. Although my work has a naturalistic foundation, creating
academically perfect work does not interest me. I prefer an expressive approach that is less about visual accuracy and
more about a universal human experience.

"On Highway 90"
It takes some effort to visit this iconic landmark, but its remote location, about half an hour northwest of Marfa, TX, near the tiny town of Valentine, doesn't keep it from being visited by those looking for the odd and quirky. Prada Marfa is the brainchild of Swedish artists Elmgreen and Dragset. If you visit, don't count on going inside--the door doesn't open. |
"Hill Country (Tubing)" oil on canvas
Grabbing an inner tube and floating down a Hill Country river is one of a Texas summer's best delights. Limestone cliffs rise above the water and trees offer abundant shade. Friends, family, and folks you just met become a temporary community that has nothing better to do than hang out and be cool--literally and figuratively. |
"Rocky Shores" (Mineral Wells) oil on canvas A visit to one of our beautiful state parks resulted in this small work that depicts the lake lined with boulders that staunchly define its edge. |
